When I read the scriptures one of the things that I do is imagine it as a director making a movie. What would be in the scene, who would be in it, how would they look, how would they speak etc. As I paint it out and try to take a bit to think of how it really was I get insights.
One of those was when I imagined Moses being called to the top of the mountain. He went up the mountain and there he was right? He went up the mountain but it was not like the mountains that you find when you go to the national parks. There was no trail. He tried this way and that, he circled around and retraced his steps because the way was impassable, there were thorned bushes, a ravine, he had to grunt his way up a bunch of loose soil until he finally made his way to the top. The whole time he was fasting and the whole time he was thinking about the people behind him. I would not be surprised if he slept a couple of nights without shelter and protection from the elements or animals.
To get where God has called us is not as easy as what we see in the movies or a 60 minute tv show (minus commercials and fluff). It's not tidy and does not have a rhythm that we can discern so we have to live by faith. God calls us to live by faith and to travel by faith and on the way we discover things about Him, about ourselves and the people around us. As you go think about what God called (challenged) you to do. Do not ask what could be the hidden things that I will learn but just go. Do it by faith and you will be humbled by your lack of ability to predict the future and you will be shaken by the fact that the creator of the universe showed interest is someone like you in the first place.
